Candle ABCs
Dive into the art of candle science with knowledge that makes ‘scents’!
Burn Time: The amount of time it takes for the wax in a candle to be completely melt
Essential Oil: A concentrated oil extracted from plant material, flowers, leaves, stems, bark etc.
Fragrance oil: A synthetic or blended aromatic compound used to replicate scents
Frosting: A natural occurrence in soy wax and sometimes soy wax blends where white chalky marks, or crystalline patterns appear on the surface of the candle
Hot Throw: The strength and intensity of a candles fragrance when it is burning
Melt Pool: Liquid wax that forms on the surface of a burning candle as it melts
(Fragrance) Notes: Individual components of a scent that contribute to its overall aroma, comprising top, middle, and base layers that unfold as a fragrance evolves
Scent Throw: The fragrance emitted by a candle
Soot: The black or gray residue often visible as dark deposits on candle containers or walls near burning candle
Tunneling: The uneven burning pattern where a hole forms down the center of the candle, leaving an unmelted ring of wax around the sides. To prevent this, ensure your candle burns all the way to the edges of the vessel. See candle care tips for more information
